Planning Approval Secured for National Sports Centre Rooftop Solar Project
Published: 07 August 2026
Manx Utilities has welcomed the approval of its planning application for a rooftop solar installation at the National Sports Centre (NSC).
The project is a key milestone within Manx Utilities' wider Energy Transition Programme and represents an opportunity to make practical use of existing public infrastructure to generate renewable electricity while building knowledge and experience in the delivery of larger-scale rooftop solar projects.
The project was one of the initiatives championed by the late John Wannenburgh MHK as part of Manx Utilities' long-term vision to strengthen the Island's energy security, resilience and energy independence.
The NSC rooftop solar project will utilise existing roof space at the National Sports Centre and forms part of ongoing work to assess a range of options that could support the Island's future energy needs, alongside wider initiatives focused on renewable generation, energy system resilience, future interconnection and demand management.
Following the planning decision, Manx Utilities will progress the next stage of project development, including detailed design, procurement activity, final investment decision and delivery planning, subject to the necessary governance and approval processes.
The project is expected to provide valuable operational experience in the deployment and management of rooftop solar generation and will help inform future assessments of similar opportunities across the Island.
