Manx Utilities Submits Planning Application for NSC Rooftop Solar Installation

Published: 07 April 2026

Manx Utilities has submitted a planning application for a proposed rooftop solar installation at the National Sports Centre (NSC) in Douglas. The project supports commitments previously outlined by the Manx Utilities Chair in Tynwald and contributes to the Island Plan objective of increasing local renewable energy generation.

Submission follows detailed structural and technical assessments of the NSC roof to ensure the installation meets all safety, design and performance requirements.

The application is supported by the required drawings, plans and assessments.  A Certificate of Lawful Development (permitted development) has also been submitted in parallel.  Either route would provide the planning basis needed to progress, with planning permission preferred as it enables a higher capacity installation.

The proposed installation would be located on the roof of the NSC’s main building. The application can be found on the Planning Register (25/01128/LAW).

This project forms part of Manx Utilities’ wider programme to support the Island’s transition to cleaner energy, reduce reliance on imported electricity and deliver practical early renewable generation at public buildings.

Further updates will be provided as the application progresses through the planning process.
