Plug-In Solar

We know that plug‑in solar (small-scale solar kits) systems are becoming more widely available, particularly in the UK.
We recognise the potential benefits of this technology in supporting lower‑carbon energy. At the same time, plug‑in solar is still a new product to the UK market, and its use on the Isle of Man is under review to ensure it can be introduced legally, but most importantly, safely for consumers.
As the Island’s electricity supplier we need to ensure that any equipment connected to the electricity network is safe and meets the necessary technical and regulatory standards.
Plug‑in solar systems are small‑scale solar kits designed to connect to a standard household socket. They can generate electricity for use within your home.
Plug‑in solar products are due to appear in the UK market from the middle of summer 2026 and expected to become more common. Their use on the Isle of Man is being reviewed.
We understand why people are interested in plug-in solar and the potential benefits it can offer. As this is a new type of product, there is not yet a dedicated approval framework on the Isle of Man. These systems cannot be connected or used without prior approval from ourselves.
While our review is underway, plug‑in solar systems would need to follow the existing electricity connection application and approval process.
We are working on the processes, guidance and policies needed to ensure plug‑in solar can be used safely on the Isle of Man. This work focuses on making sure systems are:
- Safe for use in homes, including meeting electrical safety and installation standards
- Work properly with the electricity network and meters
- Meet Isle of Man legislation requirements, which include getting approval before any generation is plugged in
Yes.
Isle of Man legislation requires all electricity generation — including small‑scale and plug‑in systems — to be notified to and approved by ourselves before use.
If you are considering plug‑in solar, we strongly recommend that you:
- Contact Manx Utilities before purchasing or installing equipment by completing an Electricity Network Enquiry
- Do not connect or use the system without Manx Utilities’ approval
- Ensure any equipment meets recognised electrical safety standards
- Have your property’s electrical installation checked for safety and suitability by an electrician registered with a recognised body i.e. NICEIC, NAPIT or the ECA to check your property’s electrical system, before installation
Further guidance on electrical safety is available below:

If you have already purchased equipment, don’t worry, here’s what to do next:
- Do not connect or use it without approval
- The installation will be subject to the existing electricity connection application and approval process. Please note that currently all solar equipment is required to be hardwired and all work must be completed and certified by a competent electrician registered with a recognised body i.e. NICEIC, NAPIT or the ECA.
- Contact us by completing an Electricity Network Enquiry form
- Be aware that additional checks or controls may be required before use
- Ensure the equipment meets recognised electrical safety standards
- Arrange for a competent electrician registered with a recognised body i.e. NICEIC, NAPIT or the ECA to check your property’s electrical system
- Note that future changes to rules or standards may affect how the system can operate
We are actively working to develop:
- A safe and proportionate approval framework
- Guidance aligned with emerging UK standards
- Clear information for customers and installers
