Construction Works to begin for the replacement of Crosby and Glen Vine Sewage Treatment Works

Manx Utilities have been granted planning permission to proceed with the replacement of the Crosby Sewage Treatment Works that serves the Crosby and Glen Vine areas, commencing November 2023.

The project supports the demands of a growing population in the Crosby and Glen Vine area and represents a significant step forward in addressing the community's vital wastewater management needs.

The present Sewage Treatment Works at Crosby built in the 1960s is now outdated and requires work to bring it up to modern day standards.  Environmental benefits take centre stage in this scheme to replace the existing works, which will incorporate newer technologies and processes designed to maximise efficiency and minimise environmental impact.  The new facility will further reduce pollutants in the discharged effluent, enhancing water quality in the adjacent River Dhoo and surrounding water bodies.

As part of the construction, there will be a need to remove some prominent trees on site. This removal, while necessary for the construction works to progress, will be approached with utmost care. Manx Utilities is collaborating closely with Ecology Vannin Consultancy Services, engaging an Ecological Clerk of Works to oversee the works involved, ensuring all ecological concerns and best practices are adhered to during this process. Planting of a number of native species of trees will be undertaken on completion of the works, which over time will restore tree cover to the area.

Work will be undertaken by Contractors Paul Carey & Sons with anticipated completion programmed for April 2025.  These works will include a pipeline installed within the heritage trail to link a new pumping station at Glen Vine to the Crosby works. Unfortunately this will involve a closure of the heritage trail during this activity, which is unavoidable, although the timing of these works should minimise disruption to local residents.  The trail will be closed for ten weeks from the start of January to the middle of March 2024.  Further details of diversion routes will be provided ahead of the works commencing.

Manx Utilities is grateful for the understanding of the local community and users of the Heritage Trail whilst this essential work is undertaken.  We are committed to providing a sewage treatment solution that is safe, reliable, efficient, and ecologically friendly that will benefit the area for many years to come.
